GOLF NEWS: JOE TERRY PRODUCES STUNNING ROUND TO WIN WITH EASE AT BARNHILL

first_imgLetterkenny Gaels GAA News:It may have been too early to be thinking of summer at the weekend with the glorious sunshine and warm temperatures, but there was certainly a “spring” in the steps of golfers at Barnhill with over two hundred competitors taking part.Once again, with the mats now lifted for competitions, it was the “low” men who showed their ability to conform to the changing conditions with two of the cat 1 members scoring below par gross! Easter Saturday Open, sponsored by Gallinagh’s Letterkenny Tool Hire & Sales, was won convincingly by Joe Terry [11] who, with the help of birdies at 2nd and 5th, took the turn with a level par gross and 24pts for the front nine and with dropping only three shots to par on the back nine, finished with a three point margin of 44pts over runner-up Paddy Mc Cafferty [22]. The cat 4. member had a great start with a birdie at 2nd and, despite a double bogey at 8th, still managed 22pts on front nine to steer him on his way to a final 41pts by scoring at every hole. In third place was Paddy Hannigan [9] who, starting with an obtuse double bogey at par five second hole, reduced the arrears somewhat with a birdie at 12th for a 22pt. inward nine and an overall 40pt. finish. Round of the day was returned by Jamie Foley [4] recording birdies at 7th, 9th, 11th, 14th & 18th on his way to a gross winning score of one under par 36pts. Jamie’s two bogies came at the par three 13th & 16th. Easter Sunday’s Open, sponsored by Global Tiles & Bathrooms, was won by another cat 4. member, Noel Gallagher [s] [21]. With a disheartening start of double bogey at 1st followed by a “blank” at 3rd, Noel’s perseverance and birdie at 5th saw him settle into a rhythm that produced a satisfactory 21pts on back nine for a total of 41pts to relegate single figure handicapper Darragh Mc Menamin [4] to the runner-up spot on B.O.T. Yet another great score from our “low” man with birdies at 4th, 10th, 15th & 18th, recording a one under par gross 35 shots on outward nine, a two under par gross 34 shots on inward nine, two bogeys and a finish of one under 71 gross. Master’s type scoring! Running a close third was Michael Nelis [11], also starting with a bemusing bogey at 1st and a “blank” at 3rd only to spring into action on back nine with a one under gross 34 shots, 24pts and an overall 39pts. Gross on the day was won by Conor Friel [7] with 33 gross points.Easter Monday Bank Holiday Open was commandeered by categories three and four, with Patrick Page [18] taking his first honor of the new season. With 22pts on the card at the turn, Patrick’s birdie at the par five 18th was enough to secure the win over Hugh Kerr [28], whose steady handicap golf yielded him 41pts and a runner-up spot. In third place and continuing his fine form from Sunday, was Conor Friel [7] who, with birdies at 4th, 8th, 10th & 18th, would rue that “blank” at unlucky 13th which left him returning 41pts also but beaten on the countback. Gross prize went to Jamie Foley [3] returning another great gross score of 35pts.This weekend’s competitions will see a singles Open Stroke on Friday, Open s/ford on Saturday and the long anticipated confined Voucher competition on Sunday, which all members are encouraged to enter.REMINDER to all members that you must have played in at least four [4] home competitions to be eligible to play in the club’s majors,President’s Day, Saturday 27th June and Captain’s Day, Saturday 11th July. The list of club Team Captains’ for the coming season is now on the notice board so any member wishing to play for any club team should contact the relevant Team Captain. The Cat 4 season will now officially “tee-off” on Monday 13th April.
