Syracuse seniors shine in final home game in 1-0 walk-off win

first_imgRachel Burkhardt embraced her pitcher, AnnaMarie Gatti, in the dugout. The senior utility player had just lifted SU to a walk-off win, but in that moment all she could do was commend SU’s starter.“You threw the perfect game,” Burkhardt kept repeating.Gatti’s game statistically wasn’t perfect – she allowed three hits and a walk – but she threw what she needed to help Syracuse (28-19, 9-12 Atlantic Coast) get the shutout over North Carolina (28-25, 15-8), 1-0 at Skytop Softball Stadium on Saturday. Gatti, with help from the rest of the field, was able to keep UNC out of scoring position for most of the game.“I don’t fear (UNC), I respect them but I want to beat them,” Gatti said.Earlier this season against Louisville she called UNC one of her favorite teams to pitch against. During Saturday’s matchup, Gatti struck out five batters including the Tar Heels’ Brittany Pickett, who was responsible for the three-run home run that secured a win for UNC the day before.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textIt was the top of the seventh and the score was still 0-0 when UNC’s power hitter was at the plate for her final at-bat. Pickett was behind in the count when Gatti threw her final strikeout of the day down the middle. Pickett froze to put the first out of the final inning on the board.“It could’ve gone either way, obviously,” Gatti said, “But it fell in my favor and I’m happy about it.”It wasn’t until that inning that UNC advanced beyond first base. It had chances prior to the inning, most notably in the sixth. For what senior Sammy Fernandez called the best play of the game, catcher Michala Maciolek launched the ball to Fernandez at second base to catch UNC outfielder Destiny DeBerry stealing.“She threw a perfect ball,” Fernandez said. “I didn’t even have to move my glove, the tag was just there.”With two outs in the seventh inning, Kristina Burkhardt became the first UNC player to reach second after Gatti threw a wild pitch. In all the noise Maciolek wasn’t able to find the ball immediately, and Burkhardt got to third base in position to score what could have been the winning run. But the next batter grounded out and SU was in the clear.“I don’t even think we kind of flinched at (the runner on third),” Rachel Burkhardt said. “We were just like you know what, it’s fine. Like we were going to get the last out, it’s not a really big deal.”It all came down to the Burkhardt, who led the inning off for SU and launched a walk-off home run over the centerfield fence. The senior did what her fellow Syracuse seniors had done all day: she delivered.“I pulled (the seniors) aside before the game,” SU head coach Mike Bosch said, “and I said ‘hey, all six of you are in the lineup today, it’s your senior day so you can make or break what’s going to happen on the field’ and they did.” Comments Published on April 28, 2018 at 5:33 pm Contact Kaci: [email protected] Facebook Twitter Google+last_img read more

The Nelson Mandela Bridge

first_imgThe Nelson Mandela Bridge, named after South Africa’s first democratic President, has won several awards. The bridge is situated in Johannesburg. The Nelson Mandela Bridge get a pink illumination every year since 2012 to raise awareness for breast cancer. (Image: South African Tourism)Brand South Africa reporterParis has its Eiffel Tower, New York its Statue of Liberty, Sydney its Harbour Bridge. And downtown Johannesburg has the iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge.Named after the man who led South Africa across the apartheid divide, the bridge was opened by Nelson Mandela in July 2003. Crossing no less than 46 operational railway lines, the 284-metre-long bridge is largest cable-stayed bridge in southern Africa.Designed by Dissing+Weitling Architecture, the bridge has won numerous awards, including the South African Institute of Civil Engineering Award for Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Achievement in Technical Excellence category. The bridge links the Braamfontein business area with the Newtown precinct. Taking two years to build, the bridge was at the heart of a inner city renewal project by Gauteng province’s economic development initiative, Blue IQ. (Blue IQ has since merged with the Gauteng Development Agency to become the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency). The rejuvenation project aimed to create a “cultural arc” – a crescent from Constitution Hill through Braamfontein and down to Newtown, which is now known as the city’s cultural precinct. The bridge links important civic and cultural institutions: the Constitutional Court, the Civic Theatre and Wits University in Braamfontein; Mary Fitzgerald Square, the Market Theatre and the 1913 Museum Africa in Newtown.Other attractions in the area are the Dance Factory, the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre and the SAB World of Beer. The square regularly hosts several big events, including the Joy of Jazz festival and Diwali.During 2011’s Joburg Fashion Week, South African designer David Tlale turned the bridge into the longest ramp in the history of South African fashion. Tlale’s Made In The City collection featured 92 models in celebration of 92 years of Nelson Mandela’s life.Watch:In 2012, the City of Johannesburg and a cosmetics company lit the bridge pink for a week in an effort raise awareness about breast cancer.Facts about the bridgeNelson Mandela Bridge carries two lanes of traffic and has two sidewalks for pedestrians as well as a cycle path, with a continuous toughened glass parapet to ensure pedestrian safety.According to Construction Weekly:The asymmetrical dual-pylon cable-stay bridge is made up of a 66-metre north back span, a 176-metre main span and a 42-metre south back span, giving a total length of 284 metres. The north pylon is 42-metres high and the south pylon 27-metres high, creating a delicate balance and an interesting visual appeal. The main span was built as light as possible, using structural steel with a concrete composite deck, while the heavier back spans were built from reinforced concrete to counterbalance the long main span. The bridge is supported on the largest pot bearings ever to be installed in South Africa. The 1.5-metre diameter bearings, which have a capacity of up to 27 Mn, are designed to accommodate the large temperature movements of the bridge.Approximately 4 000 cubic metres of concrete and 1 000 tons of structural steel were used to construct the bridge, with around 500 tons of reinforcing steel cast into the concrete.Sources: South African Tourism, Dissing+Weitling Architecture, Gauteng Growth and Development Agency, Construction Weekly, and the City of Johannesburg.Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? A New Version of Passivhaus Modeling Software

first_imgA new version of the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) energy modeling software that uses inches and pounds instead of metric values is now available. The conversion is a joint project of the Passivhaus Institut in Germany and The Small Planet Workshop, a Tumwater, Washington, supplier of materials and training for high-performance buildings. It’s an updated version of an inch-pound version created in 2009.According to The Small Planet Workshop, the conversion work was performed by Dylan Lamar, an architect at Green Hammer in Portland, Oregon. Lamar also worked on the earlier conversion.Lamar and Albert Rooks, president of Small Planet, reached a deal on the conversion with Passivhaus Institut management last year, and work has been underway for the last six months. This version of PHPP can import designs from SketchUpThe project also includes the development of plug-ins that allow the new version of the PHPP to work with the Passivhaus Institute’s new Design PH SketchUp 3D modeling tool. Rooks explained, “You can create a 3D SketchUp model and then import it into PHPP for a quick look at the values and loads. The idea behind this is to make it easier for the project designer to do some quick analysis at the initial project stage and offer quick feedback to the project client in both load values and visuals. Kind of ‘passive house on the fly.’ ”The Small Planet Workshop says there were few changes from version 8.4 to 8.5. If you want more detail about changes in earlier versions, the company has prepared a summary of the differences between 2007 vs. 2012 versions. There’s also a summary of changes between 2012 and 2013 versions in the library section of the company’s website. The Small Planet Workshop has created a new website devoted to the software. The software, called IP-PHPP 2013 V 8.5, is available for $315. It also can be purchased through 475 High Performance Building Supply.last_img read more
