Alexander Taxpayers deserve increased government transparency

first_img Categories: Alexander News 01Feb Alexander: Taxpayers deserve increased government transparency State Rep. Julie Alexander, R-Hanover, stated that today’s introduction of bipartisan legislation to make state government more transparent is another sign of the House’s commitment to be more accountable and accessible to the people of Michigan.Alexander joined her colleagues today in announcing and co-sponsoring the reform plan to make the governor and lieutenant governor subject to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and create a similar disclosure requirement for state representatives and senators called the Legislative Open Records Act (LORA).The LORA bill exempts some records: including letters to and from people from the representatives’ districts, human resources files and ongoing legislative investigations or lawsuits.“I’ve always believed that a more transparent government is better government,” Alexander said. “That hasn’t changed now that I’m a member of the Legislature.”Alexander noted that the House has made itself increasingly transparent this term by putting more information into people’s hands.“In January, we announced that the Michigan House website now includes easy public access to salary information for all representatives and staff members,” she said.Michigan is one of just two states in which the public records disclosure does not apply to the Legislature and the governor’s office. Alexander reports that she’s pleased to see changes underway.###last_img read more
