Can I Win?
I know I have written about this attitude before, but it keeps showing up in almost every sport. You can see this attitude when you look at the reserve and freshmen rosters in high school sports. It takes a very dynamic coach to get kids to run or play on freshmen and reserve teams these days. The attitude seems to be “if I can’t be a big winner immediately, I am not going to put in the time to get there. Whatever happened to the attitude of learning the trade improving and then making the varsity.I can see this at the college level where the time you have to put in and still go to school makes it an impossibility to have anything but varsity sports. After all, by this time an athlete knows whether he/she has it or not. But at the lower levels maturity comes at such a different time for each individual that it is hard to predict when someone will reach their peak.It is no wonder that schools are having a lot of trouble retaining coaches at these lower levels. You really have to be dedicated to your job to face the every day blasé attitude of a athlete who has lost the desire to pay their dues and wait for their chance at the big time. Seasons become very, very long!
